February 20, 2016 - Monday - 9:30 AM: Bait Hole and Clubhouse

The Bait Hole is being groomed now and should be ready in just a little bit. Expect the hills to be a little fast.

The trails at the Northern Timber Cruisers clubhouse are NOT being groomed today. The ridges and the hills will be icy and extremely fast and potentially dangerous.

February 18, 2017 - Saturday: Bait Hole and Clubhouse, 2:30 pm update

Don reports skiing at the Bait Hole is good to very good.

At the Northern Timber Cruisers clubhouse, skiing is good in most places; HOWEVER, there is drifting snow across the bogs and near the bogs on the five and a half mile trail loop and there are lots of branches down from the bad wind yesterday.

February 18, 2017 - Saturday AM: KWWNM report from last night

Katahdin Woods and Waters Nat. Mon. update from Friday evening:

Just back from 5 hours of dragging and grooming and it was all worth it. Trails are in excellent shape from Matagamon gate to Bowlin Camps to the Look Out Trail Head. Lots of fresh snow for those adventurous Back country skiers looking for ungroomed.

Set 2 tracks around the Old River Road Loop and single track to Haskell Rock. Packed and corduroy to Stair Falls, Big Spring Brook and the Look Out trail.

Some wind and drifting to be expected but it was starting to diminish. Several sections of the trails may have lots of Moose sign , holes, etc as it is so much easier for them to use the packed trail than struggling in the woods right now. Tracking is spectacular. Today I spotted Squirrel, otter, moose (lots) lynx and fox.

Reminder to snow shoers to please come up, but avoid the set track when you can.

My favorite ski is the Old River Road to the Oxbow road, break trail to the Oxbow picnic Area and then back up the Old River Road and out, no loop. This keeps you along the river which is so scenic . Skiing is phenomenal .

February 17, 2017 - Friday: KW&W Nat. Mon.

For Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument: Yesterdays' grooming including dragging and setting track on the Old River Road Loop. Headed back up today to do more, winds are blustery so there may be some drifting. Track set is very nice and sections just dragged are nice and flat and should set some nice track. Plan is to go all the way into Bowlin today and head of the Look Out Trail.

NEW ENGLAND OUTDOOR CENTER reports: Earlier in the week we received 24 to 30inches of new snow. Val Locke and Bill Martell have been grooming the past few days to get it into good shape for skiing. The entire system is groomed flat and wide, track set on the cove loop. Should be wonderful skiing.

February 16, 2017 - Thursday: Bait Hole and Clubhouse

The Bait Hole area is completely groomed with track set. At the Northern Timber Cruisers Clubhouse, the five and a half mile trail loop is now groomed with track set and the three mile trail loop will be finished with set track by 10:30 AM. Don says conditions are great.

February 14, 2017 - Tuesday: Katahdin Woods and Waters update

GOOD AFTERNOON

The Northern segment of the National Monument received from 8-12+ inches of fresh light snow over the past 36 hours. Today was sunny and 20 degrees. We Packed all groomed trails and set track around the Old River Road Loop Trail only in anticipation of tomorrows' snow. After tomorrow we plan on grooming all the trails as usual and setting track into Haskell Pitch and Bowlin.

It looked like the Moose were having a tough time of it with this last storm

One skier said it was the best skiing she had ever encountered in her life today!

February 14, 2017 - Tuesday: Day One After Snowmageddon - Noon update

The parking lot at the Bait Hole is plowed; however, because the multiuse trail is not yet groomed, the grooming sleds can't get in yet to start grooming the trails - so for now, the Bait Hole is not groomed. Don is planning on waiting for tomorrow evening's snow to go through before attempting any grooming at the Bait Hole.

The parking lot at the Northern Timber Cruisers clubhouse is plowed. Don & company have broken out and packed the three mile loop trail and the five and a half mile loop trail with sleds so both are skiable, though no track is currently set. Don is holding off until after tomorrow night's snow before attempting to set track.

I don't have any other updates yet. I'll post them as soon as I get them.

Friday 10 February 2017

February 10, 2017, Friday evening: NEOC update

Twin Pines trails at NEOC, 8 PM update: Earlier in the week we received 5-6 inches of new snow. Val Locke groomed yesterday and today and she also plans on grooming this weekend. So we can say for the weekend that the entire system will be groomed flat and wide and we plan on setting track on the new cove loop and up to the Saddle Loop. The rest of the system will be groomed flat. Should be wonderful skiing.

February 10, 2017 - Friday evening: National Monument update.

At Katahdin Woods and Waters Nat. Mon., groomed Old River Road Loop Trail, K Comp Trail All the Way to Bowlin, Stair Falls trail, and to the Look Out Trail Head. 5 more inches from last nights storm totaling a good foot for this week with more in the forecast. The picture attached says it all!

Fabruary 10, 2017 - Friday, 11 AM: No Black Flies!

Don just called. He just finished grooming the entire Bait Hole area. He says conditions are very good (they ought to be - it was nice snow that fell yesterday and last night). He also said to remind folks that it's a great time to get out there are ski because "there ain't no black flies there in the woods!" That's great Maine wisdom, folks, from a great mainer! So go ski!

Thursday 9 February 2017

February 9, 2017: Thursday: National Monument update

KWWNM received 8 inches of fresh snow during the last storm. We groomed the Old River Road Loop Trail with two sets of tracks . Also packed and set a single set of tracks to Haskell Rock Pitch. From there packed powder to Big Spring Brook.

February 8, 2017 - Wednesday: Twin Pines trails at NEOC update

Bill Martell groomed the ski trail system on Sunday. Last night NEOC received 5-6 inches of new snow. At the moment, skiing will be fun and smooth, no track set today as the snow will have covered it. Val Locke is scheduled to groom tomorrow (i.e., Thursday) and Friday and she also plans on grooming this weekend. So we can say for the weekend that the entire system will be groomed flat and wide and NEOC plans on setting track on the new cove loop and up to the Saddle Loop. The rest of the system will be groomed flat. Should be wonderful. NEOC also has skis for rent and snow shoes. Cross posted from: https://www.neoc.com/ski-trail-groom-report/

February 8, 2017 - Wednesday: Northern Timber Cruisers update

Don and company have just finished grooming the 3 mile and five and a half mile trail loops at the Northern Timber Cruisers clubhouse, and they broke out the trail all the way to the warming hut.

I'll post updates on other trail areas as soon as I get them.

Monday 6 February 2017

February 6, 2017 - Monday: more of the same...

Good skiing at both the Bait Hole and the Clubhouse trails. The hills are FAST!!! The tracks are a bit on the fast side too in places because of the melt-then-freeze cycles from a weekend's worth of slightly-above-freezing temps during the days. Wax for hard, fast snow if you're a waxer.

There is no change from Friday for the Twin Pines trails at New England Outdoor Center. Their 12 miles of trails are all groomed with track set. The tracks are workable but the trails are groomed really wide - so it's skate city for those of you into that sort of quad abuse. Expect the hills to be on the fast side in tracks because of the aforementioned melt-and-freeze temps from the just-above freezing days this weekend.

I got a report from a skier here in town that the skiing yesterday up at Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument was really good.

FYI: There is still no trail cut at Hillcrest - we still can not get a sled up the access trail safely in order to groom.

We have snow and freezing rain in the forecast for Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. Don is anticipating grooming at the Bait Hole on Thursday morning.

Saturday 4 February 2017

February 4, 2014 - Saturday: KW&W National Monument

We groomed and set track on the entire old River Road Loop, a nice 5 K + unless you do like I do and go all the way to the Oxbow Picnic area then turn around and ski back up the river and out the same way you came in. Beautiful River views both directions and makes for a bit longer ski.

We groomed a skating corridor on one side of the Orin Falls-Messer Pond Road all the way into Haskell Gate. 3+ Miles one way. Mark also set track to Haskell Gate. From there the snow was harder and we found it best to just leave a nice smooth corduroy all the way in to the Trail Head for the Look Out Trail. We included K Comp Trail to Bowlin Bridge and also took a run down into Stair Falls. So plenty of great skiing for everyone. A reminder that we welcome snowshoers on our trails , as well as well behaved dogs on leash, but please do not go on the set ski track . Thank you and dress warm for this weekend.

Friday 3 February 2017

Febuary 3, 2017 - Friday

At the Northern Timbercruisers clubhouse, the A-east trail was groomed with track set yesterday. The A-west trail was groomed earlier in the week. Don recommends to ski the five and a half mile loop counter-clockwise. Conditions are good.

At the Bait Hole, the fresh snowfall this week has covered over the spots that were icy so conditions are good to very good.

The Twin Pines trails at NEOC were groomed this morning and the snow conditions are very good.

There is no word yet on the National Monument trails or the Hillcrest trail as of 2:30 pm Friday afternoon.

Tuesday 31 January 2017

January 31, 2017 - Tuesday: Millinocket area

Both the Bait Hole and the Clubhouse trails are groomed with good conditions. The snow is hard-packed and a little fast in places, especially the hills. At the Northern Timbercruisers Clubhouse, the K loop is a bit rough but the A-West loop is quite good.

The Twin Pines trails at NEOC were groomed this morning. The snow is packed and fast. Conditions overall are very good.
